Some pictures from a holiday in the English Lake District in July 1999 ....
Bowfell, 902m (2960 ft) and Esk Pike, 885m (2903 ft)
A round walk of about 8½ miles from the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Great Langdale (3,200 ft of ascent)
Looking towards The Band from Stool End at 10.30 a.m, Bowfell summit is still obscured by cloud. I had done this same walk ten years ago, when I didn't see any views because of mist above 1,800 feet and I didn't want a repeat performance.
I need not have worried, however, as the cloud lifted while I toiled my way up The Band. Here is the first real view of the summit at 12.00 noon.
Last time I took The Climbers' Traverse, but this time I decided to visit the Three Tarns. This is the view of the Scafells from the largest tarn. The smallest one had almost dried up.
About 1.30 p.m. and I'm at the summit. looking out across the Great Slab with this view of the Langdale Pikes as my reward.
This dramatic shot was taken from the top of the Great Slab, looking back down to the climbers' traverse and the foot of Cambridge Crag and Bowfell Buttress.

The Langdale Pikes from the old pony route beside Rossett Gill, 4.45 p.m. There's still a 2½ mile walk through Mickleden until I'm back at the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel for a well earned pint.
